Born in New Jersey, he entered the United States Army in 1862, served through the Civil War, becoming lieutenant-colonel, 10th United States Cavalry. In 1896 he was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers in the Spanish–American War, later earning a further promotion to brigadier general, U.S. Army.
